After two years of radio silence, Kafka is back — and he’s back with a bang. Billy is the new single that marks a fresh chapter: sharp, energetic, and irresistibly catchy. The track instantly grabs you and refuses to let go, looping through your head long after the last note fades.
Billy is a song about infidelity and the constant noise of the world around you, while your mind keeps drifting back to just one thing: Billy. With its tight production and infectious hook, Kafka proves he hasn’t missed a beat.
KAFKA is the two-person band formed by Dafne Holtland and Frank van Kasteren, a marriage of musical contradictions.
She: a sky-blue voice. As ‘up’ as it gets. Light, lyrical, rounded, and harmonic, yet brazen as rock ‘n’ roll. Hand her an instrument and she’ll play, fingers flying with equal parts childlike innocence and formal training. That’s what happens when you learn to play classical music, are drawn into light (pop) music, and bring in the technique, ‘zhuzh’, and art of improvisation from the world of theater.
And what about him? Frank van Kasteren. Alternative songwriter. A workhorse on any instrument, unpolished but skilled, and with a composer’s perfectionism. Seeks the surprise of musical contrasts, adds raw beats, and tinkers until it sounds as it should. An experienced songwriter, guitar player for various bands, and creator of beautiful LPs.
Bring these two worlds together, and you get KAFKA. The musical coming together of two people who complete each other perfectly.
What does that sound like? Cheerful and thoughtful. One moment, bombastically melodic, then layered, quiet, and modest. Exciting in a Kafka-esque way, followed by the harmonic conclusions you were hoping for. With a lazy, raw undertone – rhythmic, digging, and exciting.
Kafka makes electronic indie pop with catchy melodies and infectious beats. The Amsterdam-based duo has previously landed in radio playlists with tracks such as Blueprint, Etienne, and Shimmering Light, and has performed live shows from Amsterdam all the way to Tokyo.
In 2023, they released the EP Time For Love together with Japanese DJ Wazzgogg, with whom they also performed live in Japan.
Now, Kafka returns with a new sound: Bamboozled. With this album, Frank and Dafne revisit their modern, bold productions — distinctive and forward-thinking, yet fresher, tighter, more contemporary, and more energetic than ever.
Bamboozled is Kafka’s answer to Kafkaesque times.
