Rose Spearman
Dutch American singer/songwriter Rose Spearman will be releasing her upcoming solo album ‘King of Air in the spring of 2023. King of Air will be Rose’s return on an emotional and new musical journey, always in search of a home and always being restless at the same time.
Not many of us are brave enough to write about our family, even in our diaries. Rose Spearman gathered a team to do just this. She had previously worked with writer Sarah Tyrer a few years before, but when the pandemic struck both had time on their hands and Rose and Sarah set out to explore Rose’s family history in songs that hold recognizable truths for all those from any family.
The specifics of Rose’s ancestry are fascinating, however, a tie to the Harlem Renaissance, to Oakland/ Bay Area and its jazz scene, and her own life from classical violinist to the global contemporary soul and blues vocal artist, songwriter, and ‘record label boss’.
The subjects touched on in the songs are often very raw: a family’s refusal to deal with addiction ‘Red Lipstick’, the pain of hoping to know, to share moments with an unknowable father ‘Daddy who were you, the socially unacceptable but driven affair between Rose’s grandparents – a daughter of a well-established Jewish family, and a famous black opera singer central to the Harlem Renaissance ‘After the Renaissance. The way her father lived his life both good and bad ‘Live Like a Rocket’. Her struggle to find a space for herself in ‘Who we be’.
Rose’s choice for a new sound, her songs have a more rawer edge to them, a somewhat more electronic vibe yet always soulful and bluesy.
Rose explored her family history in collaboration with musicians like Robin Berlijn, Blair Jollands, Frank van Kasteren, and Joost Wesseling, and created compelling artistic expressions that hold recognizable truths for so many.
Rose and Sarah worked with the specifics to shape ideas for the lyrics, and the choruses and music were wisely switched up by Rose to establish a far greater link to all our experiences. The specifics become the general – an entry point into all our complex stories and feelings about the people of our past, the people whose struggles created us, and the joy and struggle we inherit from them, by default.
Ultimately the album King of Air expresses our human joy in our conflicts and our transformation of them. In our ability to understand, have compassion for the most difficult, to experience wonder at each human’s unique life and story, yet how similar their emotions are to our own: how we all need and want to belong, to be loved, to do things we find amazing, to drive across The Golden Gate Bridge with a song in our heart, feeling the ancient life pulsing in our muscles, bones and good.
Rose Spearman’s music credits include winning the prestigious European Border Breakers Award, two critically acclaimed international solo albums on United and Sony Music, performing at international festivals such as Lowlands, North Sea Jazz, Montreux Jazz, Glastonbury, Exit, Sziget, Joshua Tree Festival, and the Love Box Festival. Rose also wandered the world as the lead singer of Kraak & Smaak. She collaborated with international DJs like Kerri Chandler, Boris Dlugosch, and Roger Sanchez and was invited on stage with Solomon Burke, Jools Holland, KT Tunstall, and many others. Rose Spearman was one of the few Dutch artists to appear on the American syndicated television show, Jimmy Kimmel. “Still, I realize it is time to sing my own songs again because what I miss most, is being able to connect with the audience as a live artist.”
The main reason why the recording of this album took so long is that Rose has been busy with the “other side” of the music industry, starting up her own international music company ‘M.A.R.S. Label Group’, with offices in Europe and the US. The company connects music fans with music makers and is built on the reputation of tenacity and ingenuity.
Rose says, “Assisted by several loyal industry professionals around the world, I am proud that the label has already released some top ten albums and I’m very excited about the new albums that are coming out now and receiving great reviews. I see it as my mission in life to release music and promote artists.
Rose says: “Every day when I wake up, there is a new song waiting for me in my email inbox. It gives me the feeling that I can, forever, be part of something unique and special. Yet, I realized too that singing my own songs, and being able to connect with my audience as a live artist is irreplaceable. I am committed to the best in both worlds.”
