I Was A Bird, the debut album of Utrecht based trio La Corneille, contains eleven theatrical songs filled with graceful passion, drama and bittersweet melancholy. The record is about the loss of youth. About the growing pains that come with it. Doubt, despair, ambition, illusions. Trouble in love. Compassion with peers who threaten to collapse under the burden of growing up.
As a band, La Corneille is adept at creating theatrical music with unpredictable dynamics. At one moment their songs sound tender, small and sweet, at another moment grave and solemn, and the next they unfold with grandeur and bombast. La Corneille’s music contains a volcanic quality, reminiscent of The Doors, CSNY or contemporaries like Villagers, Half Moon Run, Anthony and the Johnsons. On stage, the three musicians form a powerful trinity. They have won all the band contests they ever participated in (Clash of the Titans, Utrecht Popprijs, Sena Performers PopNL Award), toured Norway and Germany, supported great artists like Angus Stone.
